A monumental Oriental Garden outside Asia!

The Buddha Eden Garden is set occupying 35 hectares within the lush grounds of the famous Quinta dos Loridos estate in Bombarral, a few kilometers south of Obidos.

Over 6000 tons of marble and granite Buddhas, sculptures of all descriptions and sizes, lanterns, terracotta soldiers (each unique).This green space with its large central lake is a place of peace and tranquillity.

The Buddha Eden Garden was conceived by Joe Berardo in response to the destruction of the two monumental standing Bayman Buddhas carved into the side of a cliff in Afghanistan. Built during the sixth century, the statues represented the classic blended style of Indo-Greek art.

After Taliban declared that they were "idols", they dynamited them.

So saddened and outraged was Mr Berardo of this criminal deliberate destruction that he embarked on the creation of this garden as homage to the Bamyan Buddhas.

It really is quite something and it’s free (although a donation is appreciated) and open 7 days a week.
